What You Need

What You Will Need

Provisional licence

You must hold a current provisional driving licence. It will cost you £45.
If you haven’t got yours yet, you need a D1 form (available from the Post office)
You can apply before you are 17, but it will only become valid on your birthday.

Theory Test

You can start learning to drive before you pass this, but you need a pass certificate to take your practical driving test.

The Theory Test consists of two parts; Part One is the multiple choice section in which you need a minimum of 43 marks out of 50 to pass; Part Two is the Hazard Perception Test. This shows a series of video clips from inside a car, and you need to spot the developing hazards in the road ahead; the earlier you spot them, the more marks you get (maximum 5 marks per clip). There are 14 clips and 15 hazards (one clip has two hazards), and you must score 45 out of 75 to pass.
Both sections need to be passed at one sitting.

Once you’ve passed this, you can book your Practical Driving Test, but you have to pass within 2 years, or you’ll need to pass the Theory Test again.

You can book your Theory Test on 0300 200 1122 or online via the DSA website.
